Adulting 101

As you can see from my new homepage, for the past year I’ve been working on a poetry book which I am excited to share to my loyal followers. However, I am having issues with the link. Since it is published, I decided to let you know it is available. A link is coming! In editing these old poems of mine, I had to do a lot of soul searching of the young woman I was and the middle-age woman I am now. I’ve changed a lot. However, in some ways I have stayed the same. I am still learning who – the middle-age woman that I see in mirror everyday – is. When you stop eating the way you always have and return to the person who liked regular exercise, the image begins to change. Sometimes, I don’t recognize the image in the mirror. I find it annoying that it took three years for me to look this way and people are only noticing the physical changes now. It makes me realize that people pay very little attention to you on a daily basis. People are not thinking about your appearance – good or bad – every time they see you. Like you, they have other things on their mind – errands they have to run, chores to do in the morning, etc. We are not as important as we think we are, when we assume people are talking about us.

In high school, I was voted Class Protestor, because I loved to argue. I used to be annoyed at that ranking. Now, I’m proud of it. I like to talk about social, political and religious topics that people would not discuss in polite conversation. I like healthy debate. I will admit, I maybe too passionate for my own good. I have to remember, people are not as passionate about the same topics as me and my intention should be not to win an agrument but listen and understand the other person’s side.

So on this Independence Day and my upcoming birthday this month, my only birthday wish is to keep focusing on self-love and self-acceptance. My main prayer is for the world to learn to love and respect each other, like they should love and respect themselves.
